The FIA European Rally Championship fifth round has started today in the heart of the Italian capital. The 2019 Rally Di Roma Capitale will take place in the vicinity of Fiugi, but the race start is traditionally held in the ancient city center.
Friday morning began with the qualification, where the Russian crew of Alexey Lukyanuk and Alexey Arnautov took only 12th position because of the car drifting in one of the corners. This incident will not affect the course of the race, but it has affected the starting position choice. However, this is an asphalt race, and here, according to Lukyanuk, the main thing is not to be the first on the track and at the end of the list. By the way, the positions choice was held in the city hall building in the Capitol Assembly meeting room.
This time the Ceremonial start took place at the foot of the Castle of the Holy Angel, where the audience could get autographs of the drivers and watch the ceremony. For the third year in a row the rally in Rome is held as the FIA European Championship round, and every time the organizers try to make a rally car parade in the city center. After the ceremony racing cars drove through the sights of Rome: Capitol Hill, Colosseum, Piazza Venezia, etc.
There are 76 participants, 28 of them will perform in the R5 vehicles. The 16 asphalt special stages of the rally will be divided in half and the first six of them will be held tomorrow. In total, the drivers will have to overcome 189 competitive kilometers, but given the local roads nature, this rally will not be easy.
